Twenty years of houses, philosophy second

A Johannesburg practice twenty years deep in sustainable residential work, and a website built to show twelve of the houses.

Client
Veld Architects
Year
2020
Scope
Web design, Build
An architect's home office at dusk with the Veld Architects site open on a laptop, savannah sunset through the windows.
The site, on the desk it was made for.

(Overview)Built in 2020. Judged the best architecture website in South Africa four years later.

(The brief)Their old site opened with the practice philosophy, so a visitor had to read their way to the work. Sustainable design is easy to write about and hard to photograph, and twenty years of finished houses were sitting behind all that writing.

Website

(The order)The buildings lead. The reasoning follows them, further down the same page, where anyone who wants it can find it.

(What shipped)The site opens on aerial photography of a finished house, with a grid of twelve projects underneath. Every home has its own page, its own photography and its own set of drawings. Even the About page names the founder before it names the practice.

The Veld Architects site open on a tablet in a stone-walled living room beside a lit fire.
The site, in the room it describes.
Dry grassland at golden hour, the South African veld the practice takes its name from.
The veld the practice is named after.

The first thing on the homepage is a building, not a paragraph.
